Fascinating read of an award winning book. Love to read the story behind "the Look" girl. Insights into marriage with Bogie are great, as are the behind the scenes on the movie sets. I did not know she was a big Democrat but Hollywood is full of them. Interesting too that she focuses on her career, family and friends exclusively while shutting out the rest of the world, incredibly, the earth shaking events of WW2!

Highly recommend this book to any fan of hers/Bogie and classic films.

Lauren Bacall By Myself Lauren Bacall 9780345333216 Books Reviews

Thorougly enjoyed this book. Written by a very open & honest woman. Learned many things I did not know about her relationship with Bogart. Would highly recommend to any classic Hollywood buff........looking forward to reading her follow up book, but it will be hard to out do this one. Couldn't put it down. Very interesting. Lovedd itt.
Although written many years ago, "Lauren Bacall By Myself" is an absorbing and relevant book. She is still alive and well remembered by many movie-goers who saw the first Bacall/Bogart movies. Her first-person memoir shows the couple as very real people who reach Hollywood stardom and are very much in love. Their children are as important as their careers. Their life together is filled detailed descriptions of their many Hollywood friends; she name-drops because these are indeed friends and people who enjoy laughter together.

Then tragedy comes with Humphrey Bogart's illness and eventual death. He is mourned by family, by actors who knew and admired him, and by his thousands of fans.

Lauren, continues to act. She describes trying to replace Bogart with other male celebrities; she admits making big mistakes with her some of her choices. The "By Myself" of the title brings her to her own eventual theatrical success as she continues making movies and at last becomes the stage actor she has always longed to be. APPLAUSE to her for making it on her own.
I had read this book when it was first published and loved it. For some reason I had a desire to re-read it and was pleased it was available via .
I am enjoying reading this biography, I reward myself with a couple of chapters each evening before bed if all my house chores are done.... -).
Figured if it works for the kids it should work for me !!
I have never considered myself a Lauren Bacall fan but having recently rewatched To Have And Have Not, her film debut, I became intrigued about her and Bogart so I picked up this book after reading such positive reviews here at .

Well, was I surprised. First this is a very well written autobiography that demonstrates a keen intelligence and a reflectiveness on the past that is truly admirable. It is also incredibly honest and not just a recitation of a Hollywood star's accomplishments.

From Bacall's youth in New York where she tried desperately to find a place in the theater to her ultimate return to the stage as a star after spending years in California as Mrs. Bogart and raising a family, every stage of her life is well examined.

Bogart emerges as a truly good guy, not perfect but clearly they were a great match despite the obvious age difference.

Some of the episodes in her life with Bogart have the added quality of capturing a period in Hollywood and the film industry that is long gone. Bacall isn't and doesn't need to be a name dropper but so many famous characters pop in and out of her story that it is a virtual who's who of 1940's Hollywood.

What I initally picked up as a casual read turned into something much deeper. Lauren Bacall , who I knew little about before reading this is a woman who I came to really like as a result of this book.

Well written and well worth checking out for filmfans, fans of Bogart or anyone interested in acting and theater and the celebrity life of the 40's and 50's.
I've met Bacall and she's as down-to-earth as you can imagine; it shows in her book.To hear Bacall tell her own story in her own incredible voice is a treat. Though still on the first cassette, I love the way this book has been handled She reads all the great parts, and lesser parts are summarized by another reader, then Bacall picks up the narration again. In that way, the book is as close to unabridged as you can get, while taking only two cassettes. She narrates about 98%. Of course the Bogart parts, which are all of the first cassette, are fascinating and I can only assume the Robards part will also be very interesting.
What a lovely, well written book. I absolutely enjoyed this book. Bacall talks about her childhood life and Hollywood life leading up to Her marriage to Bogie, and his death. There are lots of lovely pictures of Bacall and Bogie. You feel like you’re stepping back in time to the 40’s and 50’s. Please read if you’re an old Hollywood junkie.
