While aspects of the writing are dated, that's not at all a criticism or a bad thing. The writing is never clunky or hard to understand. It just sounds like the late '30s/early '40s, and that's okay. What you quickly realize is that you're in the hands of a fabulous writer who has a keen sense of human nature and manages to translate it and transfer it well to the page.

NO SPOILERS, but if you've seen the movie, you will be pleased. The book adds layers and explains things without making you suddenly doubt or dislike the movie. You'll simply see that the movie is different here and there, but what's different isn't worse. I mention this because there's nothing worse than seeing the movie FIRST and then having the book ruin it for you because of how much better or different the book is.

On the other hand, the book IS a deeper look at the psyches of some of the main characters, which adds a richness to the characters that isn't present in the film. That I have to say. The book is "deeper" than the movie.

Back to just the book: The narration is clever (no spoilers) and you don't even realize how you get pulled into what should just be a pulpy murder mystery. This is way more than that. It's deeper than what "murder mystery" would imply. By the end (no spoilers!), you're thoroughly embedded in these people's lives. And, you don't even really see it coming. It starts out fairly plot-driven and shifts to something much more character-driven such that it sticks with you when you're done. I had planned, at the beginning, on jumping right to my next book after reading this one. I even had the next book set to the side. But...when I was done, I ended up needing about three days to transition, always a sign that a book has left a huge impression on me. Laura is that kind of read. It sticks with you when it's over. And...I didn't rush to re-watch the movie like I thought I would. I wanted the book's essence to last longer and to be the prevailing version of the story in my mind for a while. So, I plan to re-watch the film a bit farther down the road.

What an amazing novel! I love the how Vera Caspary created such a great female lead. Laura evolved the character of the femme fatale because she was depicted as a hard working woman in the 1930's and she was more independent than the femme fatales of the past. The character of Mark also evolved the genre of crime fiction because he was a new kind of a detective. It is a very interesting read and one that most people should read at least once.
Fine writing, multiple narration, strong characterization, plot twists... All played a role in turning this 1940's murder novel into a nearly-nonstop sit down read. Yes, it's dated, but it's a fascinating psychological thriller that you can't put down.
I first read the paperback almost 50 years ago . Since then I have read hundreds of mysteries but this is my favorite ! Thanks for nice big print on my .
At first I thought OMG, I won’t be able to read this...because the beginning was written in 1st person and the narrator spoke in self aggrandizing language. BUT THEN!!! What a story. Each character tells the story from their point of view. Highly recommend. This was my Book club’s selection for January. I will definitely read more Vera Caspary.
The movie "Laura" is one of my favorites and was better than the book. It also had the song "Laura" and Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics after the film came out, I believe, which added to the story. The movie also had light hearted comedy at times, not sure whether the actors, the director, the original book or the movie script brought this about. I found the book interesting to read again.
I bought this book because I loved the movie, and I figured why not indulge in the book as well. the book and the movie are very different but both equally good. some of the plot points and narration in the book are different from the movie but it only serves to make it better. we get to hear the opinions of both the main character Laura and the chief detective, as well as waldo. It was fun to get inside their heads and see what they were thinking. You could really understand how the romance started in the book because of the characters' internal monologues.
I first fell in love with the theme music from the movie and bought every album that had a version of the song. Then, I finally got to see the movie on TV back when it could be decades before they would release a movie to the small screen. I was hooked all over again. I then bought it on VHS and followed with a DVD. After all these years, Laura is still my favorite film noir.

I forget how this book came up, but when I saw it, I had to read it. It took me a long time to read because I kept hearing the actors voices in my head especially Clifton Webb as Waldo Lydecker, but it only added to my enjoyment of the book. Some scenes were presented differently in the movie but didn't lose anything in the translation and the book went deeper into the relationships between the characters, but that was inevitable.

Loved the music, loved the movie and now I love the book.
